Birgit Heraeus

Business developer in Africa for Herrenknecht AG, Germany

Birgit Heraeus works at Herrenknecht AG, the world leading manufacturer of mechanized tunnel boring equipment. She is responsible for business development in Africa. After developing a marketing and sales strategy backed by the CEO, she now leads the roll-out of the strategy in five African countries selected earlier. Currently, she focuses on market research to identify potential projects and stakeholders in the area of water supply/ sewage, hydropower and pipeline construction as well as relationship building.

Before joining Herrenknecht, Birgit worked for a start-up under Peace Nobel Laureate Prof. Muhammand Yunus, promoting the use of market-mechanisms to alleviate poverty at the bottom of the pyramid. She advised multi-national enterprises on the implementation of bottom of the pyramid ventures, among the customers was Adidas group for whom she did market research and data collection in Bangladesh to create a business plan for “The Shoe for the Poor”. She furthermore led a project team in conceptualizing social business programs to integrating social business / CSR into research and teaching at universities in Canada, Japan, Spain, Singapore and Germany.

Within Heraeus Holding GmbH Birgit did a four month internship in the financial department. In 2006 she participated in the workshop drafting the governance codex for the Heraeus family.

Birgit holds a Bachelor of Science from WHU- Otto Beisheim School of Management and a MBA from Columbia Business School.
